Help Restore the Quantico Iwo Jima Monument

The monument was damaged. The legacy endures.
On October 21, 2026, the historic Iwo Jima monument outside of Marine Corps Base Quantico's Main Gate in Virginia was severely damaged in an act of vandalism.
The limestone sculpture, created by renowned artist Felix de Weldon, depicts one of the most recognizable moments in American military history: the raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.
For generations, this monument has stood as a tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the United States Marine Corps.
Now, it needs our help.
Help Us Restore a Piece of Marine Corps History
The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is launching a fundraising effort to support the restoration of this historic memorial.
The damage is extensive. One of the monument's figures has lost its head, and additional portions of the sculpture have sustained significant damage. Initial reports estimate restoration costs could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
While the full scope of restoration work is still being assessed, our commitment to preserving this important piece of Marine Corps heritage remains steadfast.
We invite all Marines, veterans, families, and Americans across the country to join us in supporting its restoration.

More Than a Monument
The flag-raising at Iwo Jima became an enduring symbol of the determination, sacrifice, and courage of Marines during World War II.
For those who fought on Iwo Jima, and for the families of those who never returned, the image represents far more than a moment captured in history.
It represents lives given in service to our Nation.
Felix de Weldon's limestone sculpture at Quantico is an important part of the history of that image. It connects generations of Marines and Americans to the extraordinary sacrifices made during the battle and the legacy of those who served.
Damage to this memorial cannot erase the history it represents.
But preserving that history for future generations requires action.
