As our nation celebrates 250 years of American independence in 2026, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is proud to continue spotlighting the Marines whose stories shape not just the history of the Marine Corps but the very fabric of American society. Through our Marines Across America campaign, we are honoring the service, leadership, and lasting contributions of Marines in all 50 states.
Today, we turn our focus to New Mexico, a state rich with Marine Corps pride and powerful stories of post-service impact.
Cynthia Archuleta
Veterans Service Leader | Albuquerque, New Mexico

Cynthia Archuleta is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose career spans more than 20 years of service, retiring as a gunnery sergeant in 2008. Enlisting after high school in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, her assignments included serving as NCOIC of the military prison in Fallujah, Iraq, where she demonstrated steadfast leadership under demanding conditions.
Following retirement, Archuleta became a leader within the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). As a New Mexico VFW service officer and two-time commander of Post 5890 in Rio Rancho, she helped hundreds of veterans navigate VA claims, including assisting over 600 disabled veterans secure nearly $11 million in benefits in 2018 alone.
That same year, she received national recognition as the VFW Accredited Service Representative of the Year. Now serving as a Regional Quality Assurance Specialist for VFW National Veterans Service, Archuleta continues her mission of advocacy and mentorship, carrying forward the Marine Corps values of service, leadership, and commitment.
Bob Weiss
Local Government Division Director, New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration | Santa Fe, New Mexico

Cecilia Mavrommatis is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and experienced public servant leading the Local Government Division at the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA). She served four years in the Marine Corps as a utilities specialist, deploying both stateside and overseas, where she developed leadership skills under demanding conditions.
After her military service, Mavrommatis worked with the Department of Defense, managing fiscal operations for U.S. military commands in the Indo-Pacific region. In 2022, she joined the New Mexico DFA as a principal policy and budget analyst, bringing more than a decade of experience in government budgeting and financial oversight.
Now as Local Government Division Director, Mavrommatis oversees municipal budgets, grants, and statewide financial compliance, supporting essential services such as infrastructure, fire, and EMS. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in public administration, and is recognized for blending Marine Corps discipline with collaborative fiscal leadership to strengthen New Mexico communities.
