As our nation celebrates 250 years of American independence in 2026, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is proud to continue spotlighting the Marines whose stories shape not just the history of the Marine Corps but the very fabric of American society. Through our Marines Across America campaign, we are honoring the service, leadership, and lasting contributions of Marines in all 50 states.

Today, we turn our focus to Arizona, a state rich with Marine Corps pride and powerful stories of post-service impact.

Ro Gonzalez

Founder, Valors Veterans Community | Tempe, Arizona

Ro Gonzalez is a proud Cold War-era Marine who served from 1987 to 1991 and describes himself as an “old-school Marine.” His post-service journey is a testament to resilience and purpose. After surviving a personal crisis triggered by a traumatic brain injury and financial hardship, Ro transformed adversity into action—founding Valors Veterans Community AZ in 2018.

Today, his nonprofit has served over 10,000 veterans across Arizona, offering resources in employment, education, homelessness, and mental health. Ro’s passion is rooted in a belief that connection saves lives:

“Every once in a while, no matter what you’re going through, you just need a little guidance. We’re happy to help.”

From supporting Navajo Nation veterans during COVID to creating a network of healing and volunteerism, Ro’s service to veterans exemplifies the Marine Corps ethos of always faithful—long after the uniform is hung up.

Timothy T. Day

Chairman and President, Timothy T. Day Foundation | Phoenix, Arizona

Few names are as deeply woven into the legacy of the National Museum of the Marine Corps as that of Timothy T. Day, whose enduring generosity has brought to life sacred spaces like the Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel and the Timothy T. Day Overlook.

A former Marine Captain (1959–1962), Day attributes his business success to the discipline and values instilled by the Corps. He went on to found Bar-S Foods, leading the company for over 30 years and later establishing the Timothy T. Day Foundation, which supports both Marine Corps initiatives and animal rescue efforts.

His philanthropic vision continues to impact generations of Marines and civilians alike, providing spaces for reflection, honor, and remembrance in the heart of Marine Corps history.

Capt. George Meegan (USMC, Ret.)

Veteran Leader & Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Inductee | Tempe, Arizona

Submitted by Mark Blaydes

A Marine’s commitment doesn’t end with retirement—and Capt. George Meegan is living proof. A dedicated seagoing Marine, Capt. Meegan has continued to shape lives through leadership of a Young Marines unit, active involvement in veteran organizations, and unwavering service to his fellow Marines and community.

From supporting Arizona JROTC programs to organizing events at the Arizona Veterans Home, Capt. Meegan’s post-service journey is marked by mentorship, humility, and heart. His induction into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame is a testament to the values he embodies daily.
