The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation

Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Marine Corps history, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was established in 1979. Governed by a Board of Directors comprised of former Marines, the Foundation supports the historical programs of the Marine Corps in ways not possible through government funds, providing grants and scholarships for research and the renovation, restoration, and commissioning of historical Marine Corps landmarks. Encouraging the preservation of Marine Corps culture, the Foundation underwrites exhibitions, a concerto competition in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Band, and an awards program honoring writing and extraordinary contributions to Marine Corps history.

The Foundationís most recent endeavor was to secure funds for the initial phase of construction of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Semper Fidelis Memorial Park in Triangle, VA, near Marine Corps Base Quantico. This endeavor included supporting the development of an educational outreach program for middle and high school students using the exceptional artifacts on display within the Museum. The Foundationís current mission is to secure the necessary funding for the completion of the Marine Corps Heritage Center and the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and to further enhance the education program. The Foundation provides support through various programs including:
The Foundation provides funding for the study of Marine Corps history through internships, research grants, Masters and Doctoral fellowships. Additionally, the Foundation developed lesson plans for middle and high school teachers on John Brownís raid at Harper´s Ferry, the Boxer Rebellion in China, and the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The Foundation´s annual awards program recognizes superior achievement in literature, art, photography, videography, and museum exhibits and sponsors a Marine Corps History Prize in conjunction with the yearly National History Day contest.
Special Projects:
The Foundation facilitates the additions of battle honors to the base of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, VA. as well as the installation of wayside panels informing visitors on the battle of Iwo Jima, the men who raised the flag and a brief history of the Marine Corps. Further support is provided to the maintenance of the Iwo Jima statue located at the gates of the Marine Corps Base, Quantico and the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Marine Corps Commandantís House in Washington, D.C.
To preserve the history of the Marine Corps, the Foundation acquires documents, works of art, artifacts and memorabilia for display in the National Museum of the Marine Corps and facilitates the purchase of rare artifacts. The Foundation has purchased rare scrapbooks owned by former Marine Band director, John Philip Sousa, a desk belonging to the 18th Commandant, Alexander Vandegrift, and one of only six Civil War Brevet Commissions granted to Marine officers for gallantry during the attack on Fort Sumter in 1863.
Museum Store:
The Foundation operates the gift store at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA., as well as mail order and online gift stores, providing quality Marine Corps and Museum merchandise for the entire family. Visit the online Museum Store here.
